Overview

Carpentry with Liveliwood Co

What it is

Carpentry is the structural and fitted timberwork in your home: first-fix work such as stud walls, floor joists and roof timbers, and second-fix work such as doors, skirting, architrave, staircases and boxing-in. It is the work you either never notice because it was done properly, or notice every day because it wasn't.

Who it's for

Homeowners across North Devon who want a single, experienced carpenter they can trust with anything from a run of new internal doors to the timber frame of a loft or extension. Landlords and second-home owners in Croyde, Woolacombe and Saunton who need work completed properly while they are not on site.

When you need it

You need a carpenter when you are reconfiguring rooms, replacing tired doors and joinery, fixing timber that has moved or rotted, preparing a property for sale, or as part of a larger renovation where several trades need timberwork done in the right order.

Why experience matters

Timber moves with moisture and temperature, and the coastal climate in North Devon makes that worse. Getting fixings, gaps and finishes right is what separates a door that still closes in February from one that sticks by autumn. Ashley brings 16 years of hands-on experience to every job, so the work is set out correctly the first time.

What happens if it's left

The cost of getting it wrong or putting it off.

Small movement becomes structural

A sagging joist or a split stair tread starts as an annoyance. Left alone, it spreads load onto neighbouring timbers, cracks ceilings below and turns a one-day repair into a much larger job.

Damp timber keeps getting worse

Timber that stays wet, around windows, external doors or under leaking roofs, softens and rots. Patching paint over it hides the problem while the damage moves deeper into the frame.

Poor fitting costs twice

Doors hung without the right clearances, skirting fixed over uneven walls and floors laid without expansion gaps all fail early. You pay once for the work and again to have it stripped out and redone.

Common mistakes we see

  • Choosing the cheapest day-rate without a fixed price, then watching the hours add up.
  • Buying doors and timber before anyone has measured the openings properly.
  • Treating rot or movement as cosmetic and covering it with filler and paint.
  • Using several different trades for small jobs instead of one carpenter who can do them in the right sequence.

In detail

Carpentry services, materials and methods.

First-fix carpentry

Stud partitions, floor and ceiling joists, noggins for wall-hung units, roof and loft timbers, and the framing that everything else is fixed to. First-fix work is set out to line and level so plasterers, electricians and plumbers can follow on cleanly.

Second-fix carpentry

Internal and external doors, door linings, ironmongery, skirting boards, architrave, window boards, boxing-in of pipes and soil stacks, loft hatches and shelving. Second-fix is where accuracy shows: tight mitres, consistent gaps and fixings that don't pop through paint.

Staircases and flooring

Repairing loose or creaking treads, replacing balustrades and handrails, and laying timber or engineered flooring over a properly prepared sub-floor. Squeaks and bounce are usually a sub-floor problem, which is checked before anything new goes down.

Timber repairs

Cutting out and splicing in new sections of rotten frame, sill or joist end rather than replacing whole elements where a repair is sound. Where timber has failed, the cause (usually water) is identified so the repair lasts.

Materials

Softwood for structural and painted work, hardwoods such as oak where a natural finish or extra durability is wanted, and engineered boards where stability matters more than grain. Material choice is discussed at the site visit and written into the fixed quote.

Coastal and period homes

Older cottages around Braunton, Ilfracombe and Bideford rarely have square walls or level floors. Scribing, packing and hand-fitting is often needed so new work sits properly against old.

Who you'll work with

Ashley Cole and a core team of three.

Liveliwood Co is a North Devon carpentry, joinery and building company run by owner Ashley Cole. Ashley started in the construction trade at a young age and has built up 16 years of hands-on experience across most building and woodworking disciplines. When you book carpentry with Liveliwood Co, that experience comes to your project directly; Ashley is personally involved in every job, from the first site visit to handover.

Ashley works with a core team of three and brings in trusted specialist subcontractors where a job needs them, such as electricians and plumbers. That means you have one point of contact and one company responsible for the result, rather than a list of separate trades to organise and chase.

Because the same business handles both fine joinery and structural building, projects that cross the two (a kitchen inside a new extension, fitted storage in a loft, a garden office with a built-in desk) are planned as one job. The details line up because the people building the structure also make what goes inside it.

Before you start

Planning your carpentry project in North Devon.

Start by listing every piece of timberwork you'd like done, however small. A carpenter can often sequence several jobs (a sticking door, a loose stair tread, a run of new skirting) into one visit, which is quicker for you and more economical than calling someone out three separate times.

Think about how each room is used. Doors in a busy hallway need heavier hinges and harder-wearing finishes than a spare bedroom. Skirting in a utility room may need to cope with mops and damp. These details affect the materials specified in your fixed quote, so mention them at the site visit.

If your home is older, expect some surprises behind the plaster. Walls in cottages around Braunton, Bideford and Ilfracombe are rarely straight, and floors often fall from one side of a room to the other. Good carpentry works with that rather than pretending it isn't there, scribing new work to old surfaces so it looks right.

Finally, consider the order of trades. If you are also re-plastering or rewiring, first-fix carpentry needs to happen before those trades and second-fix after. Getting that sequence right avoids damage to new finishes and is part of what you get from an experienced carpenter rather than a handyman.

When you contact Liveliwood Co, a brief description and a few photos help Ashley understand the job before the visit. The visit itself is free, and the quote that follows is fixed, so you can make a decision with a clear number in front of you.

FAQs

Carpentry questions, answered.

Can you take on small carpentry jobs?

Yes, call to talk it through. Small jobs are still quoted at a fixed price after a site visit, and several small jobs can often be combined into one visit.

Do you supply the doors and materials?

Materials can be supplied as part of the fixed quote, or fitted from your own choice once openings have been measured. Either way, it is agreed before work starts.

Can you repair rather than replace?

Where a repair is sound, yes. Cutting in new timber is often more cost-effective than full replacement, and the site visit is where that decision is made honestly.

How much does carpentry cost in North Devon?

Every project is different, so there are no fixed package prices. You get a free site visit followed by a fixed quote for your job, so you know the exact cost before deciding.

How long will the work take?

Timescales depend on the size of the job. The programme is discussed at the site visit and agreed before work starts, so you can plan around it.

How do payments work?

Larger projects run on a formal contract with an initial deposit followed by stage payments at agreed milestones.

Is the work guaranteed and insured?

Yes. Every job carries a 5-year workmanship guarantee, and Liveliwood Co holds £2M public liability insurance.

Which areas do you cover?

North Devon, including Barnstaple, Braunton, Woolacombe, Bude, Bideford, Ilfracombe, Croyde and Saunton.

Can you come out urgently?
